MEATER+ Long Range Smart Wireless Meat Thermometer

Over the past two years, we had the opportunity to review amazing products, from crazy cookbooks to fancy kitchen gadgets. Even though we've already done hundreds of reviews, there are always products that can surprise us. And this is exactly what happened with the product we bring you today. So, without further ado, let's start the MEATER+ Thermometer Review.

MEATER+ is a truly wireless smart meat thermometer, that combined with the MEATER app, will help you cook the juiciest steak, chicken, turkey, fish, or other meats perfectly every time for every occasion.

A True Wireless Thermometer

The MEATER+ is the second generation of thermometers from Apption Labs. When compared to the original model the big difference between the two generations is the addition of a built-in Bluetooth extension that increases the range of the thermometer from 10m to up to 50m.

The biggest selling point of both thermometers is that they are the first true wireless thermometers on the market. All other “wireless” digital thermometers rely on a transmitter that sits next to your smoker or grill and connects to probes with wires. You can then check your temps on a separate receiver (or via app).

The Meater+ consists of a stainless-steel probe with two sensors, one that measures the temperature of the meat, and the other lets you monitor the ambient temperature in your grill, smoker, or oven. The internal temperature sensor sits toward the bottom, just above the pointed tip. On the top end is a ceramic handle and an ambient temperature sensor (so you know you're cooking at the correct temperature).

Setup and Using the MEATER+

Setting up the MEATER+ couldn't be easier! Once you install the MEATER app via the Apple or Google Play Stores the app guides you through the process of pairing.

Make sure you remove the battery protector and give the probe at least 4 hours to charge before trying to use it. Setting up a cook is as simple as choosing the type of meat, selecting a preset target temp, or modifying to suit your own target temperature. Depending on what you choose, some of the temperatures have a USDA-approved label next to them to indicate safe cooking temperature.

At the bottom of the app, you'll find four different tabs. The Help tab is home to a library of tutorials, both video and written, on how to use the probe. The Previous Cooks tab stores a history of meals you've cooked and ones you've favorited. The tab labeled with a Play button includes guided recipe videos. And the Settings tab allows you to switch the temperature scale, change the sounds for specific alerts (when something is ready, overcooked, ready for resting, etc.), as well as manage notifications and pairing options.

The Meater+ is also compatible with Amazon's Alexa, so you can use your Echo device to ask a variety of questions. This includes anything from the amount of time remaining, the internal temperature, the amount of time that's elapsed, and more.

Temperature Accuracy

According to Apption labs, MEATER's internal sensor is accurate to ±0.7 ºF (0.5 ºC). This is exceptional accuracy, thus being at the level of the best thermometers on the market like the Thermapen Mk4.

If you follow us on Instagram you probably already saw us using the MEATER+. We really like to use this gadget because it is very easy, especially in closed environments like ovens or smokers. If you follow the correct guidelines of the manufacturer, like respecting the ambient temperature range, position the food surface between the safety notch and the handle, and insert the probe in the thickest part of the food, you'll always end up with perfectly cooked food.

The only difficulty we had with the Meater+ is when we used a stovetop. With variables like the thickness of food, heat setting, and stove efficiency, it's difficult to get an accurate estimate for cooking time. But besides this we liked everything about this gadget.
