As promised, this week, we are back with a second review of a Brewista scale – this time with the Brewista Smart Scale II. So, starting this review, the first important thing to note is that the Brewista smart scale II was specially designed to espresso and developed with the barista in mind. It features 6 easy to use modes that are preset to fit whichever method best suits you. But don’t think that only professional baristas could use a scale like this. Homebrewers will also have a great time with a scale like this!

A Scale Built for Espresso

True coffee aficionados will know that coffee greatness is found in a consistent brewing technique – that includes the right amount of coffee and timing. For achieving this kind of results you will need a scale like the Brewista smart II, that has the ability to control both variables such as coffee weight and timing.

Although the Brewista Smart Scale II was designed for espresso, you have a dedicated mode to pour over coffee. With 6 programmed brew modes, auto tare and timing features, this unit will make any brew method precisely effortless. It is water-resistant and compact enough to fit under an espresso machine, allowing baristas to dial in espresso perfectly to output ratios. This is a practice that will ensure perfect extraction every time and speed up the time it takes to dial in shots.

Similarly to the Brewista ratio scale, the smart scale II comes with a waterproof silicone pad, which makes it easier to clean and have better longevity. With a water-resistant nano-coating inside and out and a completely sealed body, this unit can be kept on an espresso drip tray or kitchen counter all day long. It also comes with a rechargeable battery, so you don’t need to spend a bunch of money on disposable batteries.

6 Different Modes

Mode 1: Fully manual mode – User tares & starts timer manually.

Mode 2: Espresso mode – Auto-tare and auto-timer with immediate timer start.  Place cup on scale, timer, and weight go to zero and count up timer starts. Remove cup after brewing last time and weight are displayed for 5 seconds before resetting to zero.

Mode 3: Espresso mode – Auto-tare with manual-timer start. Place cup on scale, time and weight go to zero. Push-button on the espresso machine to start espresso extraction and at the same time press orange TIME button to start the timer. Remove cup once finished, time and weight are displayed for 5 seconds before resetting to zero

Mode 4: Espresso mode – Auto-tare only, timer is not active. Place cup on scale, weight goes to zero. Press button on the espresso machine to start shot, weight is displayed. Remove cup once finished, weight is displayed for 5 seconds before resetting to zero.

Mode 5: Espresso mode – Auto-tare and auto-timer with timer starting when liquid hits cup. Place cup on scale, weight goes to zero. Push-button on the espresso machine to start shot. When liquid hits cup, timer starts. To pause timer, press TIME. Remove cup once finished, weight is displayed for 5 seconds before resetting to zero.

Mode 6: Pour Over mode. Place brew vessel on scale, auto tares to zero. Add paper filter and ground coffee to vessel, adjust if necessary the amount of coffee. Once done press TARE. Start adding the water, timer will start.  Remove cup once finished, weight is displayed for 5 seconds before resetting to zero.

Using The Smart Scale II

We have been using this unit for a while and we are quite happy with the performance. One of the features that surprise us most was the speed at which auto-tare works. It is really fast, you add your equipment or ingredient and it will tare almost instantly. A feature like this is great because will allow you to automatically re-tare after adding each ingredient so that you don’t have to do any math on the fly. This makes it a great choice for commercial use but also for home use.

The silicone protective pad is also a great addition to this unit, that it effectively eliminates sudden temperature changes affecting the readings of the scale. The load cell inside the scale is a high precision part which is easily influenced by changes in temperature which can then cause a reading that is slightly off. The silicone pad serves to keep the heat of the cup away from the rest of the scale.

In terms of accuracy, the smart scale II measures in increments of 0.1 gram through all of its 2000g range.

Besides all the pros, there are some cons to this equipment. The buttons can be improved, you really need to press it down for them to work, and the fact they are very small does not make this process easier. The screen can also be improved, nowadays you can find better screens on the market.
