The Perfect Chef's Knife for the Minimalist Home Cook

A sharp knife is on our top list of kitchen essentials. Having a sharp knife is not only safer than a dull knife, but it also makes everyone's lives in the kitchen a lot easier. Luckily for all of us, nowadays there are a lot of good brand knives on the market.

A good example of this is Hast, a New York based knife maker that first became popular among a niche community of professional chefs, many of whom work at Michelin-starred restaurants in the U.S., but that is now growing rapidly among home cooks.

To find out whether Hast knives live up to these high expectations we decided to bring you the Hast Chef's Knife Review.

Hast Chef's Knife Review

Hast Knives

Hast was funded by early believers around the globe on Kickstarter in 2019, after a 3-year development journey. It was created by Elliot Cao in pursuit of the simple goal to make a kitchen knife that’s more relevant to modern cooking: more fun, more creative, and more inspiring. Hast knives are known for their simple and intuitive design, eliminating the seriousness often associated with high-quality cooking tools. The knives are light and perfectly balanced so even the newest cooks will find themselves eager to pull out a cutting board.

We had the opportunity to test Hast’s 8" chef’s knife and it is exceptionally lightweight. When we compared it with other knives on the market like Misen, we immediately noticed how different it felt. Besides Its lightweight, unlike traditional knives, this one don’t have bolsters that connect thin blades with thick handles. Instead, it's designed as a single piece, which makes the transition between blade and handle to be smoother and more ergonomic.

Hast's Chef's Knife has an ultra-thin blade that comes in handy for precision knife work as filleting a whole fish.

High Performance Matrix Powder Steel Knives

Now let's talk about the main reason why we like Hast’s chef’s knife so much. Although we only tested Hast 8" chef’s knife, all Hast knives are outstandingly sharp, durable, and surprisingly easy to care for, thanks to its superior Matrix powder steel.

The Matrix powder steel is a technological breakthrough that combines traditionally opposing characteristics of steel that is only seen in Hast Knives. This Matrix is the harder, stronger, and more stable future of steel. Thanks to its patented powder steel Hast is capable of bringing a new level of performance, and a great balance between durability and easy maintenance to all their knives.

In CATRA’s sharpness and edge-retention test, Hast 8" chef’s knife is 50% above CATRA’s Excellent sharpness standard, 116% above the excellent durability standard, the gold standard for the best knives in the world.

At the End of Hast Chef's Knife Review

Hast’s chef’s knife was a great surprise for us! Its Matrix powder steel makes it more durable, sharper, and easier to use than common traditional stainless steel knives. Its ridiculous lightweight and balanced body mean that you will be able to use it for long periods without feeling any hand cramps or fatigue.

If you are a fan of minimalist design and you’re looking for knives that will not only complement your modern kitchen but will also help you prep meals with ease, then Hast knives will exceed your expectations.

Sold separately, like the 8" chef’s knife we tested or available in packs, both are great options depending on what you’re looking for - whether that means a new chef's knife or a new complete set.

Summary

The Hast Chef's Knife is a great solution for anyone looking for a sharp, durable and easy to maintain knife.
