German Built Quality

Comandante is a German-based manufacturer well known for providing high-quality hand grinders for Speciality coffee. Its latest model, the Comandante C40 MKIII Nitro Blade, is a product that has been much talked about because of its excellent quality and performance.

This unit contains a stainless-steel core grinder that utilizes geometry to cut through the coffee beans for more consistent grind results without the dreaded fines. The center shaft of the grinder is set on double-axle bearings to hold the burrs in place so that the grind is uniform and your coffee tastes great.

The conical burrs on the Comandante are made with high-alloyed, high-nitrogen stainless steel with a fine martensitic matrix. This results in a high degree of edge retention and incredible sharpness. The grinding capabilities of the Comandante C40 MKIII is something it is well known for. This grinder uses a stepped grind adjustment system that can grind fine enough for Turkish coffee and coarse enough for French press.

The standard jump of the target particle size between clicks on the standard axle is ~30 microns(µm) - equivalent to 4 red blood cells. For the professional baristas looking to brew espresso with extremely precision, which is the case for companions, Comandante has created the Red Clix axle, which halves the steps to ~15µm per click.

Adjusting the grind settings on this grinder is something very simple and straightforward. By unscrewing the grind catcher and twisting the knob, you can change the grind settings to your individual preference. And even when you disassemble and reassemble the product, the grind setting will remain the same as the previous setting, making for an easy cleaning process.

Capacity

Another thing that is worth to be mention in this review, is the grinding capacity of this unit. Although the C40 MKIII is among the smaller hand grinder available on the market, it is remarkable how much coffee it can grind.

The Comandante C40 MKIII has a minimum capacity of 40 grams of coffee, which translates to 4-6 cups. Sometimes its possible to grind up to 50 g if the variety is small/dense enough. While this is certainly a less ideal grinder for someone who is consistently grinding enough coffee for 7-8 cups at a time, it is a remarkably large capacity given the grinder’s compact nature.
